They are exquisitely made and amazingly designed considering their age, not to mention that you can actually wear your "something old" and show it off!

Still, shopping for vintage wedding dresses can be easier said than done since you have to contend with various issues like stains, rust and missing parts. Not to worry though if you have your heart set on a vintage wedding dress with these tips.

Check Your Measurements

Vintage dresses are often sized differently than the more modern clothes you shop for. As such, you should be armed with a full set of body measurements, your measurements of course, from your arms to your shoulders.

Better yet, buy a corset or a girdle and put it on before fitting on the dresses. This is because most women for whom the dresses were made often wore corsets and girdles to achieve a sculpted look. Besides, it will look good to have curves on your wedding day!

Check for Stains

Some stains are harder to remove than others. If you think that a stain will not come off and it shows in a very visible area, then you probably should just walk away and look for other vintage wedding dresses.

Some tips to help you remove stubborn stains from your dream vintage wedding dresses, which is assuming that it can be removed without going to a dress restoration expert of course.

* Place your dress in a bathtub filled with either lukewarm or cold water mixed with a gentle liquid detergent. Be sure to remove metal and plastic accessories first as these can add to your restoration problems. Soak it for at least 24 hours to loosen stubborn stains and lessen yellowish discolorations.

* Remove stains with a sudsy spray solution and then gently brushing them with a toothbrush. Just don't apply a club soda solution as it will worsen the stains, even make them settle more into the dress.

Whatever you do, avoid rubbing vigorously on the fabric. It can be fragile that any drastic wringing, rubbing, pressing and cleaning performed on it can make it fall apart. And then where would you be? Perhaps, you will be saying goodbye to anything vintage, wedding dresses or not, and that would be a shame.

Check for Missing Parts

Some vintage dresses may be older than your grandmother so checking for missing parts - buttons, embroidery, ribbons, and other stuff - is a must. If you can find a store that sells vintage accessories, it will be better for your restorative efforts.

If you don't have any knowledge of such a store, try looking for possible replacements. Some stores may even carry reproductions of vintage accessories that you can use to cover up the missing parts.

If you have your bridal heart set on vintage wedding dresses but can't find one that meets your requirements in terms of it being able to withstand wear for more than 8 hours, then you can always ask to have it reproduced. There is no shame in that and you can even pass it to your daughter!
About the Author:
OnlineBridalShop.ca sells bridesmaid dresses , mother of the bride dresses and wedding dresses in all colors. The definitions seem to be changing all the time. A vintage car is usually considered to be any that was built from 1919 to 1930. However, the classic era seems to have crossed into the vintage, at least according to some experts. This can make defining the two tricky. Sometimes knowing the two are different is simply not enough information. If you have an older car and you need facts, you will want to do your homework.

The reason most people need to define their car as classic or vintage is for insurance purposes. You should always have insurance coverage on your vehicle. If anything were to happen to it you would otherwise have to pay for it out of your own pocket. And that's a chance that should never be taken with any old vehicle. Many insurance companies have a rule that the car must be at least 25 years old or older to be considered a classic. If the car is older than the 1930s it will likely be considered vintage. Of course some agencies even have a historical status for vehicles of certain ages so be sure to inquire fully.

Currently it seems that there is no concrete definition of a classic car. To some it is an old hotrod from the 1950s and for others it is the muscle cars of the 1970s. This term gets a little sticky because the definition seems to change with every person asked.

According to the Classic Car Club of America a classic automobile is any one that has been built between the years of 1925 and 1948. This is an indication of how drastically different the opinions are from resource to resource. That definition does apply to cars that were either domestic or foreign built. If you check out the club's website and find a car missing from their classic list that you feel should be there, you can actually petition the site to add it to their list. It doesn't mean that they will but it's certainly worth a try.

You will likely find that different organizations or car clubs will have their own definitions of vintage and classic cars. Many different factors affect these choices too such as the popularity of the car then and now as well as the make, model and historical value. For instance, models of vehicles that appeared on TV or in movies tend to have a higher ranking classic status than those that did not.

The rarity of the vehicle also may play a role in if it is classic or vintage. A car that is exceptionally rare will likely have a higher numerical value attached to it. This can affect what category it falls into. Do not stop searching for definitions at just one source. Compare and contrast them, form your own definition if need be based on what you find. A professional opinion is recommended for extremely valuable or rare vehicles.
About the Author:

Have a fun and safe time on the road, and visit us to find the best deal on the insurance coverage you need. All said and done this hobby is a relatively expensive hobby when compared to the others. Most of the coin collectors face problems during their early days when they find it difficult to evaluate old coin prices. If you are someone who has just about started collecting old coins, then you need to do a bit of research in order to determine the value of old coins.

There are several hardback books available that you can use for determining old coin prices. These price guides offer a convenient way of checking prices of old coins. Moreover, they also help you save lots of money in the long run, which otherwise you would have used to pay appraiser’s fees or paying different dealers. Printed price guides are a virtual treasure house of information on old coins and their prices. You can easily shop for these books in your neighborhood bookstore or at a coin shop near you. You can also find them being sold at online book stores these days. You can also choose from the older editions that are sold online over many auction sites for cheap prices.

You can also determine old coin prices using online price guides. These days eyeglass lenses are generally made from lightweight plastics called allyl diglycol carbonate. The plastic's name is often abbreviated to CR-39, standing for Columbia Resin, and it is less than half the weight of glass, which supplanted quartz in the early twentieth century. There are lighter spectacle lens option such as polycarbonate which is feather light and able to withstand heavy impact. Digressing slightly, it is the material of choice for vandal-proof light fittings.

Unfortunately, although impact resistant, the material is certainly not scratch resistant which is an important quality to bear in mind when fabricating spectacle lenses. These days polycarbonate lenses, which are a feature of safety eyewear, are surface treated to make them more resistant to scratching.

Vintage Frames

Most people want to collect vintage frames to wear them. There are a number of possible pitfalls to bear in mind. For example:

What materials deteriorate?

This is a slightly silly question as all frames deteriorate over time. Those the least susceptible to deterioration are metal-rimmed frames. However with frames from around the mid twentieth century and onwards it is common to find the end tips and the nose pads are plastic coated. The core of such frames consists of nickel, which can set off marked reaction if it is contact with the skin (nickel dermatitis). End tips & nose pads on such frames do deteriorate due to acid in perspiration, but fortunately a good optical outlet can generally fit replacement pads and tips - these may not totally match the originals, but their positioning means they will be hidden behind your ears or behind the lenses.

Other eyeglass frame material fare less well. Various plastics were utilised in the 20th century:

Cellulose Nitrate

This material, first developed in 1850, was originally used for the production of movie film and for a short while was used in spectacle frame production. However it is essentially the same material as guncotton (!) and it is now illegal to supply this, either in spectacle frames (or in films either). It deteriorates over time, and with heat gives off an acid smell. Should it catch fire it produces its own oxygen and burns really fiercely. This plastic decomposes over time and becomes dangerously inflammable. This material is so dangerous that museums are not allowed to have examples stored or on display. You should defnitely avoid nitrate frames!

Cellulose Acetate

This material was developed and used for the production of glasses frames in the early 1920s in France. Unlike its nitrate cousin this material was not flammable. It is a stable material and easily worked and colored. It is still used today for spectacle frames. Over time, if stored in overly hot conditions it will tend to lose its plasticity and elasticity, making it brittle and the shapes to warp.

Perspex

This very strong material gained popularity in the fifties and sixties for upswept cats-eye supra frames. These eliminated the lower frame rim, substituting a nylon cord (like fishing line) which was held under tension in the lower rim of the spectacle lens that had a groove cut to take the nylon cord. Although the nylon supra design was strong, the material is very brittle, needing a great deal of heat before it can be adjusted to fit the person's face properly. If the frame is not sufficiently hot it will snap and cannot be repaired. However it is actually relatively straightforward for the nylon cord to be replaced, should that break over time.

There are various other materials such as carbon fibre, which enjoyed brief popularity in the seventies, but there is not enough space in this article to cover less popular materials any more comprehensively.

Are the frames safe to wear?

Well, with the exception of cellulose nitrate (see above) yes, they are all safe.

Can prescription lenses be put into a vintage frame?

Naturally every pair of spectacles must fit you properly. Some prescriptions are not suited to certain frames, and the interpupillary distance (how far apart your eyes are!) will influence how thin the lens can be at the edge. You will need to show your chosen frame to your eyecare practitioner as it is possible to calculate the expected thickness of the lens edge for your prescription and frame chosen.

Those frames with plastic rims need to be tough enough to be heated to stretch around the lens bevel, then able to shrink back to hold the lens securely. Your eye care specialist / optometrist will be able to advise on potential problems - glazing an old frame in this way will probably only be undertaken at you own risk. Opticians canot predict just by visual inspection how fragile and brittle your vintage frame might be. Reputable companies supplying vintage spectacles from the fifties will be able to give an indication on how robust the frames are likely to be but it is likely that they too will be able to offer any cast-iron guarantees, for the same reason.

Vintage spectacle styles can undoubtedly give your fashion sense a unique flavor. You may collect simply for the joy of owning a piece of history, or for use in costume drama, or to wear yourself, but whatever the reason - good luck with your hunting!

About the Author:

Debbie Mendoza has studied fifties fashions over many years - she specializes in the history of vintage shapewear & stockings. Known as “pine,” this material has been, and still is, frequently used to build beautiful and comfortable furniture. These distinct pieces are repeatedly chosen by select decorators to give many rooms a preferred casual, rustic or country-style feel.
When purchasing pine furniture, take the various types of pine into consideration. Be it spruce, white pine, or fir, today, one can buy virtually any type of furniture in any of the various pine varieties. When at the shop, check the number of stains and colors which are presented and consider how they will fit in your home or office decor. Pay attention to the true character of the grain and verify that the wood is well preserved.
In the world of antique pine woodworking, many furniture builders will salvage the aged lumber from demolition sites, large-scale renovations, or larger furniture pieces that are beyond restoration. This means that, even if your Welsh dresser was only recently constructed, the storage unit may still be considered an antique, and almost as valuable as an original, dating back to the nineteenth century. In this case, the word “reproduction” may be subjective, and imply that the item may be a “look-alike,” rather than a “fake”.
Like with all natural wood, both new and antique pine furniture must be well maintained. The soft wood has a malleable texture and is easily susceptible to dents or scratches. Even if your furniture piece already contains obvious natural imperfections, which you may feel adds character you definitely do not want to add additional damage. Polish, wax or lacquer pine furniture when damaged or slightly discolored, and protect it by using general wood care products for daily maintenance. Furthermore, keep your furniture away from windows and vents, and try to avoid extreme temperatures, or lingering exposure to moisture. Taking good care of your timeless and original furniture pieces will keep them in fantastic shape, and will allow you to enjoy them for many years to come.

About the Author
CroSci is a non-government organisation which fosters science, technology and education development through a network of free online resources.

Top tips for investing in your first Vintage Tractor

As you are looking at this article, then its obvious that you have an interest in vintage tractors.
Make sure that your tractor performs all the basic tasks properly, so check the steering, gears, forward and reverse, PTO, lift, lights, indicators and hydraulics. Even if you want to work on it straight off, you may not be interested in a full reconditioning for some time and need to minimize the number of initial jobs. You should have a detailed check list which included at a minimum the following: does it start easily from cold, run well when hot, all the electrical components work well, does it have good traction If possible you should go to your test armed with a toolbox containing a compression tester, expensive Fluke digital multimeter, hydrometer, and other specialty tools. or bring somebody with you who has these tools.. If you don't have these tools, don't panic as these tools can end up costing more than the tractor itself.. You should in this case rely on your own common sense and your own observation skills.

Does it start from cold? - A tractor that starts easily from cold will eliminate several particular problems at once Good Battery, compression, ignition wiring / magneto, tune up, fuel flow, Carburetor can be assured (not guaranteed) by this. If it doesn't start quickly from cold, it still may be a good machine but you will have to spend some time and money on it. One thing you should be watch out for is if the tractor is out and warmed up when you arrived, you lose an important checklist item, namely the cold start, because as we all know a warm engine starts much more easily then a cold one..

How does it run when warm - Make sure you get it hot, as you will want to ensure it doesn't overheat. When warmed up you should watch out for a number of problems. Plan on spending a half-hour running it. Look for leaks, both oil and antifreeze. Lastly after warm up, shut it down and see if it will start.

How well do the brakes work - Although relatively inexpensive to replace, they are difficult to get at on many tractors and will require a lot of work to replace.

Does the tractor smoke - Blue smoke indicates many potentially difficult problems like rings, pistons, or valve guides. White or black smoke can oftentimes be corrected with carburetion or ignition changes but still represent work.

Does the engine run smoothly - A simple ticking from the top of the engine may be a simple valve adjustment but a deep thunk from the bottom or middle of the engine would point to very serious and expensive repairs. The clunk should be more pronounced under load. This may be an indication of problems with the bearings, crankshaft or piston rods. And mean a very expensive repair job.

Work the hydraulics - Check the full range of the power rams by extending them with a load. Let the load sit in the hold situation for a period of time to be sure that there is no slippage. Chattering noises from the pump while lifting indicate the pump is not getting enough supply of hydraulic fluid. The pump might have experienced excessive wear when run this way for long periods of time and may be ready to fail.

While many of the above examples may sound a bit negative, you should do your background research and understand the specific issues a tractor may have before you invest.Patrick Malloney is an internet entrepreneur who founded Youtractor.com which offers 1,000 of tractor videos showing Farm Tractors

Silver Certificates: How Much is a 1923 Silver Certificate Worth?

The 1923 Silver Certificate is one of the most popular and common paper notes. All United States Currency that was minted before 1928 is larger than that of a modern paper bill -approximately one-half inch wider and over one inch longer.

For you trivia buffs - the term 'billfold' came about because these large-size notes had to be folded several times to fit in a wallet! Because of its large size, the 1923 note was affectionately given the nicknames of 'Horseblanket' or 'Saddelblanket.' In fact, it was the last large-size certificate to be minted.

Once upon a time, silver certificates were one of the most desired and trustworthy of bank notes minted in the United States. These notes were actually backed by real silver and could
be redeemed at the U.S. Treasury for silver dollar at any give time. In those days, a dollar had alot of buying power!

The front of the 1923 silver certificate features the familiar bust of George Washington. It also displays the blue Treasury seal that was engraved on all silver certificates printed during this time and an decorative 'cogwheel' reverse. Given the fragile nature and short life of paper money, only a very few of these extraordinary certificates exist today.

The value of these notes wholly depend upon the condition of the bill itself. Notes that saw average circulation would probably grade somewhere between EF (Extremely Fine) and VF (Very Fine). These certificates would have sharp corners, no tears, bright, unfaded colors and several folds. A lower quality note of F (Fine) to Fair would be worth less, of course.

If you are lucky to come into possession of a certificate in CU (Crisp Uncirculated or Uncirculated) condition with no folds, bends, creases, tears, etc., your value would be a great deal more than some of the listed prices that are found. Determining the condition or grade of paper currency is not a precise science. It's very selective and each dealer has a different methodology as there's no 'official' grading system.

Okay, so now that we understand a bit about grading, how much is this 1923 silver certificate worth, if anything? Well, according to the latest Red Book Price Guide, an uncirculated Blue Seal variety, signed by H.V. Spellman & Frank White or Walter O. Woods & White would be valued at $125.00. Even a low grade such as VG is currently valued at $35.00!

Antique Collecting As A Profitable Business Venture

Antique Collecting As A Profitable Business Venture

In this time and age, something that is 10-decades old or more is definitely valuable. This is because not everything can be maintained and kept well for such a long time. Because of this, antique collecting has become one of the most profitable business ventures out there.

If you are planning to make antique collecting a profitable business venture, the first thing that you need to do is familiarize yourself with everything about the trade. This can be done by doing extensive research on antiques by visiting online antique sites on the Internet or just by compiling reference materials from magazines or books. When you are doing your research, make sure that you include basic antique terminologies and terms, tips in identifying real antiques, spotting fake items, how to take care of the pieces properly, and places where to buy and sell the antique pieces.

Taking Care Of The Antique's Value

The selling point of any antique piece depends not only on the age of the item but also on its overall condition. This is why antique collectors and businessmen should be very particular about maintaining a certain piece and taking care of it properly. If you are planning to make a business out of antique collecting, make sure that you memorize by heart the dos and don'ts in selling and buying antique pieces.

If you are buying an antique item, the first thing that you need to do is familiarize yourself with it. This means that you should be very well aware what the subject is and its history, as well the advantages and disadvantages of buying it. This will ensure that you are getting your moneys worth and you can easily sell it without so much effort. Knowing the item will not only give you it's estimated value but can also prevent you from possessing fake pieces.

Aside from knowing the item on sale, it is always best to have a backgrounder on the seller. Make sure that you buy from a seller with a reputable background so you can ensure that you are buying the real thing. If you are buying online, you can check the reliability of the seller based on the feedbacks given by recent customers. If you are buying from an antique store, you can check the authentication documents of the item as well as of the store.

For those who make antique collecting a business by selling the items, make sure that you market the items carefully. This means posting them online on days when potential buyers are online, providing brief but complete information on each item, and being credible, reputable, and honest when selling them.

Vintage posters - Online Inspirational Posters

Nothing is more contrasting like the happenings of human life. Debate, discuss, and lay down the facts, but nothing beats experiencing the live thing. Nothing tops really letting the senses feel everything, or to hear, touch, smell, taste, and to see the real deal.

The axiom, "To see is to believe," is what we get when go to museums or car shows to watch and be awed by sports, exotic, luxury or classic cars that are all in display. But with Las Vegas car rentals, the right thing to say is, "To sense is to believe." The real experience and the awakening of the senses is the promise that Las Vegas car rentals bring you.

An even more appreciated point is the fact that with Vegas car rentals, we can still drive one of the leading luxury cars of the past that has now gone defunct. These luxury car models are not for sale anymore. But in Vegas, we are given the option to "rent" the experience and understand the reason why it was one of the leading luxury cars back then. Take the 1937 Packard 120 Convertible Sedan, for example the.

The 1937 Packard 120 convertible sedan was a car manufactured by the now defunct Packard automobile company. Packard automobile was founded by brothers James and William Packard, along with George Lewis Weiss in Ohio. James, a mechanical engineer, believed that they could build better horseless carriage than the Winton cars owned by Weiss. He had ideas for improvement on the design of current automobiles and by 1899 they were manufacturing vehicles. The company which they called the Ohio Automobile Company introduced a number of innovations such as a modern steering wheel and years later the 12-cylinder engine.

While other cars of that time like the Cole 30 & Colt Runabout were priced at US$ 1,500, the Oldsmobile runabout at US$ 650, the Western's Gale Model A roadster was US$500 and the Black was US$375.The Packards were priced at US$ 2,600. Still, they had a following among the wealthy purchasers here in the United States and abroad.

While other car companies like Franklin, Marmon, Ruxton, Stutz, Stearns-Knight, Dusenberg and Peirce-Arrow crashed during the Great Depression, Packard survived by producing more affordable cars in the medium-price range. In 1935 the Packard 120 convertible Sedan came out. It was Packard's first under-US$ 1,000 car.

The Packard 120 was produced from 1935-1937 and again on 1939-1941. It had numerous body styles that included convertibles, coupes and two-and four door configurations. The 1937 model had a "C" and "CD" trim levels. It had a wood-bodied station wagon, a touring sedan and a limousine body style. This model was equipped with a 282 cubic-inch motor with a 120 horsepower, dual side mounts and a heater.

It was after the second World War that Packard began to show signs of its end. It was at this time that Packard suffered a shortage of raw materials needed to manufacture automobiles. In 1959, the Packard nameplate was pulled out from the market. In 1995, there were plans for reviving the brand but the project was later abandoned and the world realized that 1959 was the last for the Packards to ever grace a showroom.

The 1937 Packard 120 Convertible Sedan remains to be one of the luxurious cars of history. And the thrill of riding it can still be experienced through renting it at one of the classic car rentals that Las Vegas offers. Don't limit yourself. To see is to believe is not enough. Go for the full ride, experience to believe.

About the Author
Las Vegas Exotic Car Rentals: From 1928 to 2008 we have the LARGEST selection of Exotic, Classic and Luxury Rental Cars on the Strip! Adding framed antique bird prints and fish prints is a simple way to embellish a “lodge” atmosphere in a cottage. Creating groupings of antique botanicals, such as fruits and flowers, is a simple way to embellish a healthy green atmosphere in any room. While millions frame and mount antique prints for decoration, all face the inescapable decision of choosing to acquire antique originals, or opting to use antique reproduced prints. While the dilemma is seldom debated by decorators and designers, the decision made yeilds implications of potentially essential significance.

While some claim that antique original prints have a splendid visual character quality that cannot be duplicated, many find it hard to differentiate an antique original print from an alike reproduction print. The discrepancy in opinion is generally a product of the physical condition of the original print. The amount of digital enhancement performed on a reproduced image before printing can also make a significant impact on how the two compare. On the other hand, some things, such as the vintage appearance of worn and aged paper, just cannot fully be reproduced. Up until the 1990’s there was almost no question as to if an antique original print looked better than a reproduction antique print. It wasn’t until the current age of sophisticated computer technology that original antique prints were scanned (either by digital scanner or camera), enhanced, and reprinted with such superb quality and attention to detail that the reproduciton prints contend with the original source.

Regardless of any individual opinion on how looks factor into the decision, there are few who argue on the substantial difference in cost. Antique originals are overwhelmingly more expensive, and, depending on each print’s rarity and condition, can be three to one hundred times (or more) the cost of a reproduced of the same image. With this in mind, the question is often asked - if most viewers would have a hard time distinguishing between the two, one must wonder, is the cost justifiable? It really depends on the individual. For most hobbyist home decorators and DIY interior designers, the answer is no (especially considering that many will mount themed groupings in several rooms in their homes). Yet, to many collectors of original art, the vintage authenticity of a work of art that dates back several hundred years is very appealing, and the cost is justified. There is also something to be said about the investment value of some rare antique prints. Like any collectable, the values of original antique prints can potentially appreciate over time. For those who desire collectability and value more than they do decoration, this is certainly something to consider. Still, for many interior decorators it is much more cost efficient to seek quality reproductions that suit their individual needs and preferences.

Lower cost isn't the sole benefit to decorating with reproduced antique prints. They also offer flexibility and customization options that help fit a unique work of art into an already well-decorated room. Some print reproduction companies will offer prints in an assortment of size, matting, and framing options. Finding a desired print available in 8x10 to fit in a wall display grouping, when the original from which it came was a 5x7, is a luxury only available through reproduction. If trying to stay on a budget, look for publishing companies that offer prints in standard-sizes---(11"x14", 8"x10", 5"x7"). Because these sizes are widely used, one can easily aquire low cost framing and matting materials. The ability to order a print in Black & White or Sepia is also a decorating advantage. Although only some publishers offer these options, seeking out those who do may be an important element to giving a room the desired effect without compromising the established theme.

Author:
Joseph Borowy provides educational articles from http://www.ChartingNature.com - Visit our Antique Prints page at http://www.ChartingNature.com/antique-prints.cfm to view our unique antique reproductions!

Terms: Articles may be reprinted provided content is not edited and links are kept live

Source: www.articledepot.co.uk

History and use of lunch tins

What do you think of when you think of grammar school? Playgrounds, favorite teachers, bullies? Some of us have nice memories, others...well, not so nice.

One thing that does stand out in my mind though was lunch time. No standing in those long lunch lines for me! No way! My mom made sure that I would have nutritious meals. So, every August we would go hunting for...yep...lunch boxes. That was a process. After all, it had to be the right one, the one that would show my favorite...whatever of the year. That was part of the fun of shopping, finding what it was that best suited my mood or personality at that time.

Here’s a little background on lunch tins: They weren’t used until the early 20th century when people started using tobacco tins to haul their lunches to work and school. Can you imagine the smell that went along with each bite of sandwich? Yuck! The first lunch tins were made at INCO mines in Sudbury,Ontario.

In 1935, Geuder, Paeschke and Frey produced the first licensed character lunch tin, “Mickey Mouse”. It was a lithographed oval tin and had a pull-out tray inside. It did not contain what they called the “vacuum bottle”, what we know today as the thermos.

In 1950, Aladdin Industries created the lunch tin based on Hopalong Cassidy. This one sold 600,000 in it’s first year!

Do you remember your favorite lunch tin? Superman? Partridge Family? Care Bears? Barbie? How about Archie Comics or Peanuts or Knight Rider? There was a lunch tin for everybody!

Sadly, they stopped making metal or tin lunch boxes in the 1980’s due to concerns of them being used as weapons on the playground.. In the 90’s, people had pretty much stopped buying them altogether, though they still make some out of vinyl or plastic.

Too bad. It was fun that first day of school “showing off” our lunch boxes (never mind the contents!), seeing what fads my friends were into.

Some of your older, in-good-shape ones, actually sell for a few thousand dollars! Have one laying around in your attic?

It’s a long lost era. The fun news is that there are “retro-lunch tins” out there. A few places sell them, and antique stores still carry a few.

About the author:
http://www.nostalgic-candy.net

Article Source: http://www.Free-Articles-Zone.com

Cooking Up Memories In Vintage Aprons

Whenever I think of kitchen aprons, or see my wife wearing her retro aprons around the house, I conjure up images of post World War II suburban America. Americans at this time had, in the aftermath of war, a renewed interest in "the home" and creating family units, if you will. The family represented everything that war didn't--comfort, safety, security, and a return to traditional gender roles. During wartime, women held jobs that were conventional for their husbands, but in the postwar era, there emerged this strong notion that men should be the primary breadwinners and women should make it their job to cultivate the home and raise the children.

According to a 1954 issue of McCall's magazine: "The most impressive and the most heartening feature of this change is that men, women, and children are achieving it together. They are creating this new and warmer way of life not as women alone or men alone, isolated from one another, but as a family sharing a common experience."

Such enthusiasm in regard to family togetherness generated an overall sense of strength and safety at a time when the threat of nuclear war was on everyone's mind. The nuclear family became a representation of shelter and refuge for America to the extent that, in advertisements especially, it became impossible to separate the image of the nuclear family from that of nuclear warfare and bomb shelters. The droll phrase used in ads at the time, as some of you may remember, was "Fallout can be fun."

It's funny how certain material objects can bring about imagery from another time, and as I mentioned before, this is what happens when my wife wears her retro aprons around the house. I find it a little ironic that she used to wear similar kitchen aprons 50 years ago--only they were a bit more authentic in that context. Now she wears them simply because they're vintage and "fun." She is quite the fashionable 75-year-old, I must say.

Even though I was once after the American Dream myself, and wanted that security of a nuclear family that was so coveted during the old days, I celebrate the fact that there are many different types of family units today. I love seeing my wife in her kitchen aprons, but the fact that she is a strong, opinionated woman who worked as a college professor for most of her life, makes them look even better on her. I couldn't imagine her playing any other role!

Author:
Written by Kacy Suther. Determing the age, as you would imagine, is the natural first step in establishing vintage golf club values.

The Grip - The texture of the grip can offer a meaningful hint about the age of an old golf club. Older clubs were generally equipped wit flocked suede grips. Generally speaking, clubs made after the early 1920's were manufactured with leather grips. It is also important to spend the time and energy to effectively determine whether the grip of a vintage golf club under evaluation is original or whether perhaps it could be a once or twice removed replacement. An accurate assessment here is critical as you begin your analysis.

The Club Face - The club face on antique golf irons is often smooth. Although many players manually scored their club faces, the marking of faces on vintage iron clubs was not introduced until the first few years of the 20th century. Again, even though this would certainly not rank as an exact method of dating old golf clubs, a smooth face would certainly indicate that you are in possession of a club that dates prior to 1905.

The Wooden Shaft Test - Whether or not the shaft is made of wood is a primary indicator of age. There were clubs manufactured after 1930 where preowned golf clubs with metal shafts were overlaid with plastic covers. Even though these are often represented as authentic wooden golf clubs, the old reliable magnet test can always uncover whether the original shaft is wood. If it not, this is a post 1930 age factor.

The Metal Club Head - Simple test. Prior to 1920, a different grade of steel was used to manufacture clubheads. This inferior grade of steel, as you would expect, results in clubs which today look more dated; dark colored, sometimes even rusty. An old golf club that still exhibits a shing clubhead woul point to a pice dated post 1920.

Markings or Stamps - If there is a marking or shop stamp, an Antique Gold Club Reference Guide , like our recommended resource could be used to date the club pretty precisely.

As with many antiques, often times the best way to preserve golf club value is to do nothing at all in the way of polishing, or painting, or shaft repair that would compromise the original integrity of the piece. Any reputable antique dealer, and particularly those in the golf collectibles arena, would be well equipped to help you understand those things that would enhance value vs those things which would compromise value.

Also, remember when acquiring a vintage golf club, especially through a commercial channel, to ensure that you receive a certificate of authenticity, and if possible, a golf club appraisal with your purchase.

K Harrigan
http://www.antiquegolfclubs.org

Author:
Kevin Harrigan

Terms: Articles may be reprinted provided content is not edited and links are kept live

Source: www.articledepot.co.uk

Antique Furniture- Making The Right Purchase

Buying antique furniture may be harder than you ever anticipated. You may have to go through oceans of fakes and reproductions before you get to the genuine article. That is the reason why it is necessary to look at an item thoroughly before deciding to buy it. Antique shopping is not a place for impulse buying; it has to be approached with great care and research in order to get the most from your antique furniture purchases.

An example of things going awry in the world of antique purchases is the case of Sam. It was Sam's first time to purchase an antique furniture item. He had been saving for such and was thrilled when he found a magnificent piece that he strongly believed to be genuine. It was a huge display cabinet that was beautifully made. The smooth talk and wit of the salesman sealed the deal. It was only two days later that he discovered that he has been duped and that the piece was a reproduction from an unknown carpenter in a nearby locale. At the end, he ended up US $20,000 lighter and with a piece of furniture that was worth way less.

If it is your first time to purchase an antique item, be wiser than Sam. Consult a professional if you can. If you don't have the means to do so, try reading and looking up tips in how to spot the fake from the genuine article. Here are some basic tips and tricks to help you get a genuine purchase.

(1) Get a thorough look at the object. Look at all sides of it and even at the bottom part. Don't settle for something standing against a wall without looking at its back. Try looking at these objects under bright light as flaws will generally manifest themselves under the scrutiny of a bright glare. Be wary of sales personnel who seem pensive and hesitant to show you all sides of the item. Consider that a red flag, they are usually hesitant to show you the product because it will show its true nature as a fake, a refurbished item and maybe even a reproduction.

(2) Ask questions. Ask yourself and other people if it looks old enough. Notice the wear on the product and try to conclude if it's genuine or not. Never be hesitant to inquire about the item. Ask about its origins, its previous owners and whatever. Remember that a genuine piece will likely have a long string of history attached to it.

(3) Check the outward appearance and the quality of the product. Look out for uneven shading and hues as this will alert you that the product is of less quality. Of course, expect blemishes, but look out for signs of shoddy workmanship like nail head sticking out and other signs.

(4) Last, but not least, a second opinion is always important. There will be things that only another pair of eyes can notice. An expert's opinion will always be one of the best. If you have to shell out some cash for the services of a known expert, it is always much more productive than purchasing something above its perceived value.

To find great deals and a variety of antique furniture in the UK visit: http://www.antiquesbizarre.co.uk
Author Info:

For author bio visit:http://www.steviebabysblog.com/

Starting To Collect Antique Furniture

Clear, relevant information on Western furniture from 1660 to 1900 by a leading authority. If you've been wondering whether your pre-war ceramic bowl is worth anything, you need to determine if you have a real antique on your hands. With over 100 million avid antique collectors worldwide all participating in a global market that could top $150 billion in 2008, there has never been a better time to revisit those old or cherished collectibles you may have in your possession.

Below are five guidelines to judge whether or not you should take the next step of meeting with a professional appraiser. You can also use these signs to make sure you're getting quality when you are buying antiques.

RARITY - Items are valuable because they are rare. For example, a limited edition printing of a painting is more valuable than a painting by the same artist that was distributed in wide release. There are a few different aspects that constitute rarity. An item can be considered rare if very few pieces were made to begin with or if just a few of the pieces are still in existence. You've also got something rare on your hands if it's in an unusual color or design for the particular type of antique. Other rare items include common items with an unusual size or shape.

AESTHETICS - A piece's aesthetic quality has a lot to do with its value. Even though aesthetic tastes are very personal, there are certain things that look good to everyone. When everything about the piece is balanced and harmonious, it's considered to be aesthetically appealing. If it's pleasing to your eye, it will probably be pleasing to others as well.

DESIRABILITY - Trends come and go in popular culture and they do in the antiques and valuable market as well. Trends depend on a number of factors. For example, after the death of a public figure there is an increase in demand for items related to that person.

AUTHENTICITY - Doing research on your item will help you tell whether or not it's authentic. There are certain types of antiques that are frequently replicated and without having a careful eye, you can be easily duped. Many types of antiques have guidebooks that detail what to look for in authentic pieces. A good appraiser will also be able to tell you if your piece is authentic.

GOOD CONDITION - If your item meets all of these standards, the only thing left to determine is its condition. Ideally, your item will be in the same condition that it was when it was first created. However, depending on the age of your antique, that's not always possible. The closer to mint (original) condition the more valuable it will be. In some cases, a very rare item will still be valuable even if it's in damaged condition.

Author Resource:-> Casey Markee is a consultant with worldwide consignment shop Nate D. type='text'>The History behind Tactical Watches

Tactical watches were born from wrist watches that came from a man named Louis Cartier. Cartier made his friend, a Frenchman, Alberto Santos-Dumont a leather wrist band to hold his pocket watch for him and he made it popular in his native France.
Tactical Watches and Service Men - The wrist watch gained more popularity during World War I when officers came to realize they were more suitable than their normal way of telling time.

In addition, pocket watches were more of an item for the middle and upper classes, wrist watches were for the working class and the servicemen were certainly among the working class.

Infantry and artillery men needed to depend on their timepieces as the battles became more and more complicated. Because the attacks needed to be coordinated and the watches were needed on the ground as well as in the air, the military pilots found them to be just as useful as the patrolman on the ground did. Ultimately, the military commissioned their own manufacturer of wrist watches that had a black face and white numbers for ease of reading. They produced them by the masses for their troops, both airman and ground soldiers.

Tactical Watches in the Second World War - During the Second World War, a popular watch was similar to the former watch called the A-11 and had the basic needs of airmen in mind. It had a large black face and white numbers with aviation coordinates available.

Post War Tactical Watches - Following the war, soldiers wore their watches around town and they became even more popular with the middle and upper class. Then they helped to modify the wrist watches into more than just a timepiece. The standards were raised and watch makers added a chronometer, which is a clock that is used for navigational purposes and is designed for long term precision and accuracy. Then came the slide rules which made appropriate engineering and scientific calculations for many applications for both airmen and artillerymen.

Today's Tactical Watch - It wasn't before long that watch makers began tweaking and adding to the wrist watches and they began to come up with more and more sophisticated watches.
Today's tactical watches have had the input of several law enforcement agencies, Special Operations Units, SWAT teams, and military personnel before coming up with a design suited for all grades of tac tical units.
There are tactical watches today that come with software you download on your computer and then plug into the tactical watch and load various programs for what you want the watch for.

You can customize your tactical watch to fit your needs. Watches with Computers - Some tactical watches are actual computers that are no bigger than the ordinary sized watches, yet hold some of the most complicated programs for military; Special Forces and police would need out in the fields. There may be a few more buttons on the outer circle and a few more items to read in the manual, but other than that, these tactical watches are the same, durable and dependable watches as the rest of the tactical gear: ready for all conditions. There are programs for the tactical watches that are similar to a GPS tracking system.

There is software that can help you with your gun scope, or what's known as a ballistics calculator and wind velocity and muzzle velocity for shooting purposes. The watch is water resistant to 100 feet or more. Of course tactical watches have the date and time. Sometimes the watch will give more than one time zone, and has an alarm, as well as a stopwatch, a second hand, and a back light for night viewing. All of these features come in handy for many of the military and police who use the tactical watches.

They are also made for high altitudes and diving specifications such as being water resistant. Traditional Tactical Watches - Somewhere along the timeline, the leather watchband became a thing of fancy watches or everyday watches and the tactical watches adopted the strength of the nylon strap with Velcro to hold it in place. This has been a traditional piece of the tactical watch since its beginning. All of the traditional watchmakers manufacture tactical watches and military grade timepieces, but several clothing, knife and gun manufacturers also make and produce tactical watches.

They are all certified to military grade specifications and guaranteed to perform under the worst of conditions. Tactical watches are durable, dependable, military grade watches that are sold to the Armed Forces, Special Forces and police SWAT teams, as well as to the general public. There is a wide variety of styles and types to choose from depending on what you are going to be doing while wearing the tactical watch.

About the Author
William "Cole" Doggett is the owner of Knife & Supply Company, LLC. But as early as 1335 several bright minds have been trying to come up with a 'horseless carriage'.

In Italy there were quite a number of designs for wind-driven vehicles, none of which were ever built. Leonardo da Vinci designed a clockwork vehicle, but that too remained just a concept.
In America there were two prominent figures who would be remembered as forefathers of the modern automobile-- Ransom E. Olds and Henry Ford. Olds was the first mass producer of gasoline-powered automobiles in America, while Ford built several prototypes and began selling cars in 1903.However, these cars were really nothing more than crude horseless carriages, and they looked a lot like them too--the open body, the large, wooden wheels all screamed 'carriage without a horse'. But by 1916 certain developments enabled these carriages to become viable means of transportation, with better mechanics, increased power and efficiency, and most of all, safety and comfort.

uring the 1916-1924 period, most automobile designs have improved drastically.
The dangerous hand crank was replaced with electric starters, and kerosene lanterns were replaced by electric lighting. Enclosed bodies were also becoming more popular, and the windows can be raised or lowered at will. These improvements not only made automobiles more stylish, but also safer and more comfortable for both passengers and drivers.
Driving was slowly becoming more pleasurable.

Apart from increased comfort and security, another important characteristic of cars that became emergent during this period was the increase in durability and affordability. Automobile manufacturers like Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Buick, Plymouth, and Oldsmobile were mass-producing durable cars on assembly lines, which made it possible for more people to travel around at an affordable price. So much so that even modern brides may be seen walking down the aisle adorning vintage jewelry with pride. There are many beautiful pieces to buy from: studded necklaces, antique engagement rings, crosses pendants, brooches, bracelets, lockets and many other wonderful pieces of timeless art and beauty.

A common saying is that they don't make things like they used to do. This saying can without a doubt apply to antique jewelry. The way these beautiful pieces were crafted, presenting a beautiful finished product that has stood the test of time all these years is truly outstanding. Not forgetting that craftsmen centuries ago didn't have all the tools and equipment that people use today and had to rely on skill and hand craftsmanship.

There are many who love Antique jewelry and often wonder about the historical past of their fine delicate pieces. This is an accessory that has been passed down from generation to generation, and if these remarkable items could put their past into words some amazing stories could be told. There are also many antique jewelry lovers who enjoy researching the origin and historical background as well as wearing the pieces.

Casual antique jewelry will always be best worn in the daytime. Those who are going out in the evening for a special meal or evening out will love to wear something that is a bit more extravagant. Adjourning a fabulous pair of antique earrings or necklace will put a sparkle in any woman's eyes, making them feel like a fairy tale princess.

The best way to purchase these lovely pieces is to go to any local auctions in your area who deal in this type of jewelry, or word of mouth through friends who have the same taste. Another way is to scour your local paper for any forthcoming house sale auctions. These types of sales usually mean that the entire contents of the house, including the furniture, paintings and jewelry may be up for auction. The way many people shop today is online. Ebay is example of this but make sure you do thorough research and homework to ensure you pay the right price.

Jewelers fairs is a good way to look at many different pieces and also to gain some knowledge of how jewelers will specify the age and value of certain pieces on display. There may be some pieces that they claim are from 1900 to 1950 (Edwardian, art deco and retro jewelry), and there may be heirloom pieces at least two centuries old from the late Georgian or Victorian eras.

Antique jewelry is not only purchased to wear. Many choose to buy a piece as an investment as this type of jewelry appreciates in value as the years progress. Even if you do not wear this type of jewelry it is worth buying a piece, even if you leave it in a safe box somewhere. If you buy right, it can only appreciate in value so no money will have been lost.

Author Resource:-> If you are looking to buy antique wall clocks then the author has a large range at fantastic prices in his online store including German, Gilbert, Kroeber and Seth Thomas.

Article From Talkinmince Article Directory

Antique Jewelry: A Practical & Passionate Guide

Antique Jewelry: A Practical & Passionate Guide

Vintage Posters and Buying Tips

Somebody said that poster collection is incomplete without having a couple of vintage posters on the walls. Antique maps are not only historical gems, but they can also be beautiful pieces of art. Some of the earliest known maps were drawn by the ancient Babylonians, Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese. The ancient Greek astronomer, Ptolemy, drew one of the earliest world maps. Today’s experts have recreated the Ptolemy map. During the middle ages in Europe, map-making declined somewhat due to the leading philosopher’s interest in religion. Priests during the European middle ages preferred to concentrate on religion and spirituality rather than geography. While there were some maps drawn, such as Anglo-Saxon maps, Europe still had a lot of catching up to do with Asia where map-making was concerned. During the middle ages, the Chinese were leading with map-making sophistication. As the middle ages in Europe began dying out, Europeans were able to catch up with the Chinese. The discovery of the Americas played a huge part in increased map interests. During the exploration period, historic maps began to flourish. As the known world grew to explorers, so did the maps. World globes were also being made near the end of the fifteenth century.

Beautiful tapestries of the world were also made during the 16th and 17th centuries. Antique world maps were captured in detail and sewn on wall tapestries. The craftsmanship of world map tap tapestries, globes, and historic maps was very striking and detailed. They were truly works of art, and are still around today. Collectors of history consider antique world maps to be very valuable, and many are still in great condition. Replicas are also being made on parchment paper for a “antique” feel. Some collectors prefer their antique world maps to be in as much mint condition as possible, while others enjoy the old, yellow stains that give historic maps true antique-ness.

About the author:

Written by Danuin Mumm. So it is with bird cages. Antique bird cages are a popular addition to many houses and apartments. They fit in with many styles of decorating, including Victorian and shabby chic. Chinese antique bird cages are available for an Eastern flair.
If you are buying an actual antique, prepare to pay a hefty price. Be on the lookout, though, at garage sales and flea markets. Sometimes you can find an undiscovered treasure for mere pennies. More likely, though, you will have to pay.
Ebay is one place to check for antique bird cages. Before spending a large amount of money, make sure that your seller is reputable. One way to ensure this is to only buy from sellers with positive feedback.
Though authentic antique cages are pleasing to the eye, they are not the best home for your bird. Many antique bird cages are treated with chemicals or paints that can be toxic to your bird. If you buy a true antique, use it for decorative purposes only.
If you desire the look of antiques without the price tag, reproductions are also available. Replica antique bird cages often maintain the look and style of the original, but at a fraction of the cost. Victorian reproductions are especially popular. Select Home Décor is one source for reproductions. Department stores, home décor stores, and some home improvement stores also sell faux antique bird cages.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bird Cages provides detailed information in decorative, large, custom, acrylic, antique, wooden, and discount bird cages sale, as well as covers and stands. The advertisements at this time portray a care free way of life which many aspired to. The ads were colourful and bold, eye catching and elegant.

Who could predict, all these years later, that vintage car memorabilia would be in such demand? Despite the fact that we now have the fastest, most technologically advanced cars ever, we are still fascinated by these images from the past.

Maybe this is to do with the historical context of these ads, we can imagine a time when life was somewhat more care free, and motoring was more relaxing.

Think about what you've read so far. Does it reinforce what you already know about collecting? Or was there something completely new? What about the remaining paragraphs?

There is also the immense pleasure to be had of having these images scattered around our homes. You may collect vintage car memorabilia to adorn your rooms, or to sell later on for a profit.

Hanging these car ads in suitable frames can give depth and character to a room. If you are a lover of art and antiques, you will soon realise that these old car advertisements can add great interest to your collection. People are drawn to them, and the older generation will always have a story to relate about their own car passions and experiences.

Hunting down and finding vintage car memorabilia and ads is all part of the fun of collecting. You may have a particular model or make in mind, or you may prefer an eclectic selection. Antique and collectors shops are a good place to browse, but maybe an expensive way to buy. Garage sales, car boot sales, flea markets are another good source, if you have the time.

Probably the best place to browse and buy, however, is the Internet. Auction sites such as EBay are stuffed full of information. There are also many websites on which you can find others who share your passion. Whatever your reasons for collecting vintage car memorabilia, whether it is for fun, profit, or both, you will never tire of the wealth of fascinating material that is easily available.

Now might be a good time to write down the main points covered above. The act of putting it down on paper will help you remember what's important about collecting.

American Retro 1955 Classic Black Racer Pedal Car

The American Retro 1955 Classic Black Racer Pedal Car was inspired by the very rare Giordani Racers of the 1950’s. The size of the movement also needs to be paid particular attention to. The size of the watch's movement is determined by measuring the dial across the centre and then through to the point where it is the narrowest. The standards set by the railways meant that the watch was required to meet size 18 or 15.227 mm precisely. A larger size of 16 or 16.919 mm came into force in the 30's.

dditionally, the watches became open faced instead of enclosed in attractive hinged cases, and they now used Arabic numerals instead of the familiar Roman numerals. Every watch used a minimum of 17 jewels in its movement. There were 5 positions that each watch had to have the ability to be adjusted to, these being face up, face down, crown up, crown down, and sideways. An accurate time within 30 seconds of the week were expected of each railroad pocket watch. They were also required to be able to compensate for the temperature range of 34 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. These were mandatory and with these standards and requirements, it meant that these particular railroad vintage pocket watches were unsurpassed during the time of their manufacture.

The railway industry went through an incredible growth spurt and American watch manufacturers had to rise to meet the challenge of making watches that had to be more and more accurate, and they frequently surpassed even the standards and requirements of the railroads. Keep in mind that during the 1800's, trains were the not only the primary mode of transport, but they also carried valuable goods for trade and industry. This was one of the major reasons why typical conductor railroad watches, which we now know as antique pocket watches, were crucial.

Punctuality, however, was not the only thing at stake. The watches had to be accurate to ensure that no accidents happened. Every day there were literally hundreds of trains to manage, and they all had to keep exact times. If the precise time wasn't kept, accidents could happen. For example, when tracks were switched on a scheduled time, if times weren't on time, they could collide, so precision was crucial.

One famous collision occurred in 1891 in Kipton, Ohio and was due to the fact that the conductor's watch was late by a mere 4 minutes. This was the incident that prompted the government to issue the standards for the railroad pocket watches. The first company to comply with the requirements set by the railways was the Waltham Watch Company, but these were very quickly followed by all of the major watch making companies that we are familiar with today. These include Illinois, Elgin and Hamilton. These are the vintage pocket watch that frequently feature as many as jewels and no less than 6 adjustable positions in substitute of the recommended 5 that are most wanted after by collectors and have the most value.

Lapel Watch

A convenient way to keep track of the time, this lapel watch features regular time, military time and a yellow glow in the dark face. At antique shows and shops the phrase “They just don’t make them like that any more” is often over heard, and for good reason! Generally toys which have reached the age of roughly fifty years will be considered antique. However when you look for vintage toys you will often see items which are only ten to fifteen years old. The word vintage has a slightly looser meaning than the word antique among sellers of these items. This is fine because there are actually many factors involved in which the status and value of collectibles are defined.

With any collectible you need to be acutely aware of the condition of the item. Mint condition can even result in many times more than the value of an item in just good condition.

It is a good idea to keep in mind that not everyone’s ideas of condition are going to be the same. This is why you should always closely inspect your potential purchase either in hand or through quality photos. You should also ask any questions you may have regarding the authenticity of antique vintage toys to be sure that the information is jiving correctly with what you already know about certain toys from certain periods. This will help you decide if the seller you are dealing with is knowledgeable, or at least honest. But aside from the age and condition there exists yet another point to collecting antique vintage toys; the shear fun of collecting them. Often a person may have started a collection as a child and then they find themselves well into their adult years still collecting!

And often the ultimate goal is to have a complete set of something; this can keep the fires burning and the collecting fever going for a lifetime.Vintage items offer a great means of investment because they are getting rarer every day. It is never possible to truly predict what will become a collectible in the future, and the last thing anyone thought about in the past was that in the future a cheap little toy would become a valuable antique that would be highly sought after by collectors.

And certainly what once cost maybe a few dollars can now be worth several hundred dollars or even much more. Since this is such a huge and active market, you can easily find several options for repairing antique vintage toys when necessary.

A true specialist will be familiar with not only the proper repair process for wood or metal toys, but also how to fix issues without causing any more market devaluation than necessary. Some collectors will seek out damaged items at rock bottom prices and then spend some money on having them properly restored to near original condition. This can be a great substitute for an absolutely mint example which may be nearly impossible to find do to the overall rarity of the piece. The antique vintage toys market is very strong today, like they say “They just don’t make them like that anymore” and unfortunately they never will again.

Steiff Classic 1905 Teddy Bear Blonde Mohair 12”

A Steiff Classic 1905 Teddy Bear is ideal for your collection.
